The old cast iron watermain was the city's principal transmission feed to the distribution system. The project was completed successfully using pneumatic pipe bursting technology.
The 300mm diameter cast iron water main was replaced by a nominal 450mm inside diameter water main - a combination of open cut and pipe bursting due to slope stability issues and the proximity of a 200mm asbestos cement main running parallel.
The water main was the City's principal transmission feed to the distribution system.
The pipe bursting section was up a steep (>20%) Trans Canada Highway embankment with shallow cover (0.6m to 1.0m). The 300mm diameter cast iron pipe was upsized to 500mm diameter HDPE pipe to meet nominal inside diameter requirements of the new main.
